Najin and Fatu: the last two northern white rhinos
Two female rhinos are all that is left of the northern white rhino. Najin and her daughter Fatu live in a guarded enclosure at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, near Nanyuki in Laikipia County. The northern white rhino is a subspecies of the white rhino. With only two females alive, natural breeding is no longer possible. These two are the only northern white rhinos alive.
You meet them on a separate guided visit, not on an ordinary game drive. If you are building a day around it, start with our guide to Ol Pejeta day trips and add the rhino visit as one of your activities.

Sudan the rhino and the move from the Czech Republic
How the last northern white rhinos came to Kenya.
20 December 2009
Najin, Fatu, Sudan and Suni arrived at Ol Pejeta from Dvůr Králové in the Czech Republic.
Sudan, the last male
Sudan became known around the world as the last male northern white rhino. He died on 19 March 2018 and was euthanised after age-related ailments and infections.
Najin and Fatu today
Since Sudan died, the two females are the whole subspecies. They live in a guarded enclosure, which is why access is limited to guided visits.
History of Ol Pejeta →Our pick: a day trip with an optional rhino visit

BioRescue and the last northern white rhino: where the work stands
The science, with dates and without promises.
The method
A research team collects eggs from the females, creates embryos by IVF and transfers them into southern white rhino surrogate mothers. The partner on this work is the Leibniz-IZW in Berlin, with the BioRescue project.
Embryos
The team has produced 39 pure northern white embryos in total, 38 of them by August 2025. Not all of them are still stored, so 39 is not the size of the current stock.
Transfers
Three transfers took place in the second half of 2025, and six in total by April 2026. None of them led to a lasting pregnancy. The current project phase runs from June 2026 to December 2028.
The first IVF pregnancy
On 24 September 2023 a southern white embryo was transferred into a southern white surrogate called Curra. A fetus of 70 days was confirmed. Curra died in November 2023 of a bacterial infection. That pregnancy was a test of the method, not a northern white rhino.
In short: the work is still at the stage of embryos and transfers, and nobody can say when or whether a calf will follow.
How to meet the northern white rhinos
The visit is a separate experience with fixed time slots.
| What | Price in 2026 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Meet the Northern White Rhinos | $70 per adult | Slots 08:30–09:30, 11:00–12:00, 15:00–16:00 and 16:30–17:30, generally daily. There is no separate child price. |
| Conservancy entry, non-residents | $110 adult, $55 child | Children aged 3 to 11. Under 3 is free. |
| Conservancy entry, East African citizens | KES 2,000 adult, KES 1,000 child | Residents pay KES 3,500 and KES 1,750. |
| Self-drive game drive | Included in entry | No close approach to the enclosure. |
Slots depend on the welfare of the animals and on availability. Book at least a day ahead. For most visitors, a good plan is one morning slot for the rhinos and the rest of the day on a normal game drive.
Where to go next: the other rhinos of the conservancy are on the white and black rhinos page, and the full list of paid extras is on the activities page.
Practical points for the visit
Gates, payment and timing.
Gates and hours
Visitors enter through the Rongai or Serat gate, daily from 07:00 to 19:00. Pick a rhino slot first and plan the rest of the day around it.
Payment and booking
The gates are cashless, and online tickets are the normal route. The conservancy's booking portal asks for bookings through it, so reserve before you travel and do not count on buying at the gate.
Re-entry
A day ticket covers one entry. If you leave and come back, you pay again. Overnight guests are covered for 24 hours.
Getting there
Nairobi is about 220 km from the conservancy, or 4 to 4.5 hours each way by road. Nanyuki is the nearest town.

Northern white rhino: frequently asked questions
Can I see Najin and Fatu?
Yes, on the guided visit called Meet the Northern White Rhinos. It costs $70 per adult in 2026, on top of conservancy entry. There are four daily slots, and they depend on the welfare of the animals and on availability.
How many northern white rhinos are left?
Two, both female: Najin and her daughter Fatu. Natural breeding is no longer possible.
What happened to Sudan?
Sudan, the last male northern white rhino, died on 19 March 2018 at Ol Pejeta after age-related ailments and infections.
Has an IVF northern white rhino been born?
No. The transfers of northern white embryos up to April 2026 did not lead to a lasting pregnancy. The first IVF pregnancy, in 2023, used a southern white embryo.
Can I drive up to the enclosure on my own?
No. The rhinos live in a guarded 700-acre enclosure. A normal self-drive does not include a close approach, so the guided visit is the way to meet them.
Is this the official Ol Pejeta website?
No. This is an independent travel guide. For current rules and bookings, use the conservancy's own channels and check the details shortly before your visit.
