Ol Pejeta day trip: what to expect
Most Ol Pejeta tours start in Nairobi or in Nanyuki, the nearest town. They differ in how you travel, how long you stay and what the price covers. The entry fee, the vehicle fee and paid activities are sometimes in the price and sometimes added on top, so compare inclusions rather than the headline number.
A day trip from Nairobi is a long day. The road is about 220 km each way and takes 4 to 4.5 hours depending on traffic and the road. Added together, that is 8 to 9 hours of driving before any game drive. The gates are open from 07:00 to 19:00.

Pick a day trip if you have one day, the half-day tour if you want the park fees settled up front, or the overnight option if you want more than one round of game drives. The park entry is on top for most of these, so check each card.

Nairobi to Ol Pejeta: day trip, overnight or fly-in
How the formats compare.
| Format | Time on the move | Time in the conservancy | Check before you book |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day trip by road from Nairobi | 8 to 9 hours of driving in total | Short, the rest of the day | Pickup time, return time, entry fee in the price or not |
| One or two nights in or near the conservancy | 4 to 4.5 hours each way | A full afternoon and a morning or more | Where you sleep, which gate, meals |
| Fly-in to Nanyuki | Scheduled flight of about 60 minutes from Wilson Airport, then a transfer | Longer than a road day trip | Transfer time to the gate, flight times and baggage |
| From Nanyuki | A transfer to the gate | Most of the day | Which gate, pickup point, entry fee |
For most visitors who want more than a quick look, one night in or near the conservancy gives a better balance than a day trip from Nairobi. Flights leave from Wilson Airport, not from the main international airport. See the getting there page.
What to check before you book
The wording differs more than the prices do.
Entry fee
Non-residents pay $110 per adult and $55 per child in 2026. If the tour price does not include it, you pay it separately. See the park fees page.
Vehicle fee
A vehicle with up to 6 seats pays KES 1,000. Larger vehicles pay more. Ask whether the operator includes it.
Paid activities
Lion tracking, night drives and meeting the northern white rhinos cost $70 per adult. A day trip rarely leaves time for them, so check what is listed. See the activities page.
Gate and pickup
Visitors use the Rongai and Serat gates. Ask which one your tour uses and what time you will leave and return.
Booking and payment
The gates are cashless and the conservancy points visitors to online tickets, so make sure the operator has your entry sorted before the day.
Combine Ol Pejeta with other places
Neighbouring landscapes with their own guides.
Nanyuki, the nearest town, lies near Mount Kenya, and the Aberdare range is another neighbour. For climbing and walking routes, see the guide to Mount Kenya tours. For the Aberdare range, see Aberdare National Park. For a day in the capital before or after your trip, see Nairobi day trips.
From Nanyuki, the nearest town, tours are shorter on the road. Transfers to the gates are not part of the entry fee, so agree the pickup point and price with the operator. If you stay in town, the Nanyuki page shows what the base offers.
Each place has its own fees, so check them separately and do not assume a combined ticket.
Ol Pejeta day trip: frequently asked questions
How far is Ol Pejeta from Nairobi?
About 220 km, and the drive takes 4 to 4.5 hours each way depending on traffic and the road. Nanyuki is the nearest town.
Is a day trip from Nairobi worth it?
It works if you accept a long day. The driving alone adds up to 8 to 9 hours, so the time in the conservancy is short. An overnight stay gives you more time on the tracks.
Is the entry fee included in the tour price?
It depends on the tour. Check the inclusions. If it is not included, non-residents pay $110 per adult and $55 per child in 2026.
Can I fly to Nanyuki?
Yes. Scheduled flights link Wilson Airport in Nairobi with Nanyuki, with a flight time of about 60 minutes. You still need a transfer to the gate.
Can I visit Ol Pejeta and Mount Kenya on one trip?
Yes, they are neighbours, but they have separate fees and no combined ticket should be assumed. Plan each on its own terms.
Is this the official Ol Pejeta website?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Laikipia County, the Kenya Wildlife Service or any safari operator, camp or hotel.
